The Scrubbed In Show by Peerr - “Our Story From Medical Students to Socialising Education”

“We like to think we are the Krept and Konan of Medicine with Scrubbed In and more recently Peerr being the icing on the cake for us. To find out how it really began I need to go all the way back to 2011.

Fresh faced and straight out of college, I entered King’s College London for the first time to study Medicine. It just happened that the first guy I sat down next to was Amz, little did I know it would be the start of so many amazing things to come. Born and brought up in the council estates of London, we quickly found common ground. Yet, he was the sharper one of us from the very beginning. Dressed in the finest clothes known to man you wouldn’t have known otherwise. In contrast, I turned up wearing a tracksuit in a room full of future doctors. To be honest, not much has changed all these years later.

Fast-forward a few years, struggling to keep up with Amz’s academic prowess we eventually entered clinical years as clinical partners. Clinical years were amazing for us both as we finally got a glimpse of what it meant to be a doctor cementing our love for medicine. We were living out for the first time in Margate with some of our closest friends with every night being crazier than the previous. It’s fair to say not a single textbook was opened throughout those 3 months away from home.

The following years were some of the hardest but perhaps the most memorable. Side by side we assisted in theatres, published research, travelled the world, started a business and finally graduated together.

I still remember holding up the graduating queue so we could ‘spud’ each other in the middle of the ceremony because for us things were about to change for the better.

However, I didn’t do as well in my SJT so had to move away to Coventry for foundation training. It’s fair to say I had a lot of time to reflect and think about my journey. That’s where Scrubbed In was born after a late night phone call to Amz whilst he was on honeymoon with his wife. We realised we had such an amazing journey so far and what a shame it would have been if we didn’t share it with other people who also had a similar background to us.

The goal was simple, to share our story as a source of motivation and inspiration for others like us. Since then, the podcast has grown immensely and is now ranked as top 2.5% of all podcasts and fortunate enough to have guests from across the world share their own incredible stories.

As you can imagine, through podcasting we soon fell in love with audio driven learning and later released ‘PodCases’ an audio driven app to give medical students an immersive experience through storytelling. We had doctors contribute cases, however, despite trying to recognise their efforts, everyone kept assuming we created the content ourselves and never really acknowledged all their hard work and effort, at the same time we could never figure out ‘how much’ was fair to pay them.

This never felt right for us, as we were keen to ensure educators got the recognition they deserved, including the financial rewards.

So, we looked around to figure out how other platforms were creating and sharing content, to only realise that medics (who also happen to be our peers) were unfortunately spending hours creating content but having to ‘sell’ it to large companies for a small one-off flat fee and in doing so losing all ownership, while these companies went on to profit, as they re-branded the same content.

That’s when we decided, we either change and do something about it or ‘PodCases’ may end up becoming another one of these companies.

So we built Peerr, a platform where healthcare professionals can now share their knowledge and insights, all on their own profile whilst building their own brand, growing an audience and earning monthly income from engagement (we share our revenue with educators each month).

Not to mention, they still own 100% of all their content!

We are still at the beginning of our journey and really hope we can come together as a community and empower educators and learners.”
