Celebrating Partnership: Locum's Nest and MSE win 2023 HSJ award for Best Acute Sector Partnership with NHS

Dr Ahmed Shahrabani,
Co-Founder of Locum’s Nest

We are thrilled that our partnership with Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSE) has won the Best Acute Sector with the NHS HSJ Partnership Award 2023. This is a tremendous achievement and a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, as well as the remarkable partnership we have built with MSE.

Our collaboration with MSE began during a time of great challenge, as we worked to support the merger of three hospitals (Broomfield, Basildon and Southend hospitals) in early 2020 amid a global pandemic. The result of this merger was the creation of MSE, which is now one of the largest trusts in the country, offering county-wide plastics, head & neck and upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgical centre to a population of over 3.4 million, and home to the world renowned supra-regional burns service at the St Andrew’s Centre.

The challenge was to create a collaborative bank across three previously independent trusts, so together with MSE teams, we developed and implemented tailored tech-supported solutions to support the merger and the creation of the MSE medical staff bank. We designed and implemented end-to-end process mapping with temporary staffing teams, providing efficiencies to onboarding, compliance, and shift management. This resulted in consistent increased shift fill rates, reduced agency spend, and saved time in admin and payroll. These improvements have also led to an increase in the collaborative bank size, resulting in better service delivery and patient care.

The judges of the HSJ Partnership Award recognised the clear evidence of the benefits of our tech solution, both in terms of improving patient care and delivering financial savings. And we are truly honoured and proud to be part of this incredible partnership, and we look forward to continuing to drive positive change and innovation in the NHS.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our partner trusts who were finalists across various categories. It is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collaboration demonstrated by all the teams involved who continue to have all made significant contributions to the NHS, and we are honoured to work alongside them.
