Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Locum’s Nest is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 or earlier.

Our 2030 target reflects our commitment to reducing the environmental impact associated with our operations, workforce, technology infrastructure and supply chain.

As a healthcare workforce technology company working extensively with the NHS, we recognise the importance of supporting the transition to a lower-carbon economy. We therefore intend to progressively reduce our greenhouse gas emissions between our baseline reporting period and 2030, rather than relying solely on action at the end of the target period.

Our approach is based on measuring our emissions, identifying the principal sources within our organisational footprint, implementing practical reduction measures, monitoring performance annually and progressively reducing residual emissions towards Net Zero by 2030.

Carbon Emissions Measurement

Locum’s Nest is currently undertaking the detailed calculation and validation of its greenhouse gas emissions inventory.

This exercise is designed to establish a robust and evidence-based understanding of emissions associated with our operations, business activities, workforce, travel, waste and relevant supply-chain activities.

Our emissions calculations will be expressed in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) and will provide the quantified baseline against which future carbon-reduction performance will be measured.

We have chosen not to publish estimated or unverified emissions figures while this calculation is being completed. This ensures that carbon information published by Locum’s Nest is evidence-based, reproducible and capable of being monitored consistently from year to year.

Once the calculation and validation process is complete, the resulting emissions inventory will form the quantitative basis of our ongoing annual carbon reporting.

Our Carbon Reduction Trajectory to 2030

Locum’s Nest is committed to a progressive year-on-year reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, culminating in Net Zero by 2030.

Our detailed annual target emissions are currently being calculated alongside our emissions baseline. This work will establish an evidence-based reduction pathway appropriate to the scale and nature of Locum’s Nest’s operations.

The precise tCO2e targets associated with this trajectory are currently being calculated and will be set using the verified emissions baseline.

This approach means our targets will be based on actual organisational emissions rather than unsupported estimates. Once established, performance will be reviewed annually and our reduction programme adjusted where necessary to maintain a credible trajectory towards Net Zero by 2030.

Carbon Reduction Initiatives

Locum’s Nest has already established environmental measures across its operations. These initiatives will continue to develop as our quantified emissions data enables us to identify the areas where further intervention will have the greatest impact.

1. Energy efficiency

We are committed to reducing energy consumption associated with our offices and technology infrastructure.

Our approach includes adopting energy-efficient technologies, optimising the use of heating, lighting and cooling and transitioning towards renewable and lower-carbon energy sources where practical.

As a technology company, we also continually consider opportunities to improve the efficiency of the infrastructure supporting our digital services.

2. Remote and flexible working

Locum’s Nest makes extensive use of digital collaboration and remote-working technology.

This reduces the requirement for employees to commute to a fixed workplace every working day and enables meetings that might otherwise require physical travel to be undertaken virtually.

Remote and flexible working will therefore remain an important component of our strategy for progressively reducing emissions associated with commuting and business travel.

3. Reduced business travel

We seek to avoid unnecessary business travel by using virtual meetings and digital collaboration wherever these can effectively replace physical journeys.

Where travel remains necessary for customer delivery or other business requirements, we will continue to explore lower-carbon transport options and opportunities to reduce the frequency of journeys.

Business-travel emissions form part of our emissions measurement programme, enabling the effect of these measures to be monitored over time.

4. Sustainable procurement and supply chain

Locum’s Nest is progressively embedding environmental considerations within its procurement and supplier-management activities.

This includes giving consideration to suppliers that demonstrate credible environmental commitments, encouraging responsible purchasing decisions and working with suppliers and partners to identify opportunities to reduce emissions associated with the goods and services we purchase.

As our carbon reporting develops, supplier information will increasingly support our ability to identify and manage emissions within our value chain.

5. Waste and resource efficiency

As a software-led organisation, Locum’s Nest operates predominantly through digital processes.

We seek to minimise unnecessary use of paper and physical resources and encourage responsible consumption, reuse and appropriate recycling of materials and equipment.

Waste generated through our operations is included within our carbon measurement programme so that improvements can be quantified and monitored.

6. Employee engagement

Achieving Net Zero requires participation across Locum’s Nest.

We promote awareness of energy conservation, waste reduction, sustainable travel and environmentally responsible working practices.

Employees are encouraged to identify opportunities for further environmental improvement, ensuring carbon reduction becomes part of our wider approach to continuous improvement.

7. Technology and digital transformation

Locum’s Nest develops digital workforce technology for healthcare organisations.

Our technology supports the digitisation of processes including workforce management, shift booking, communications, compliance documentation and timesheets, reducing reliance on paper-based and manually administered processes.

We will continue to consider environmental efficiency as our technology and services develop.

Measuring Progress

Our carbon-reduction programme will move progressively from measurement, to reduction, to Net Zero.

The immediate priority is completing and validating our emissions calculations. These figures will establish the quantitative foundation for our annual targets.

Thereafter, we will assess performance annually against the established baseline and the previous reporting year.

Our principal measures of progress will include:

·      total greenhouse gas emissions in tCO2e;

·      percentage reduction against our established baseline;

·      annual change in emissions;

·      business-travel emissions;

·      employee-commuting emissions;

·      energy-related emissions;

·      waste-related emissions; and

·      relevant supply-chain emissions.

This approach will allow Locum’s Nest to demonstrate measurable progress rather than relying solely on qualitative environmental commitments.

The carbon reporting lead is responsible for overseeing the development of our emissions inventory, monitoring carbon-reduction activity and ensuring progress towards the 2030 target is reviewed at the appropriate organisational level.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan and associated emissions information will be reviewed as our measurement programme develops and subsequently updated on an annual basis.

Confirmation of Net Zero Commitment

Locum’s Nest formally documented its commitment to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 or earlier on 31 December 2024.

That commitment remains in force.

We remain committed to progressively reducing our greenhouse gas emissions between now and 2030 and to establishing quantified annual targets based upon our verified emissions baseline.

The Locum’s Nest leadership team continues to support the organisation’s Net Zero by 2030 ambition and the measures required to achieve it.

Our greenhouse gas emissions and associated annual target emissions are currently being calculated and validated. We will not substitute unsupported estimates for verified organisational emissions data.

Once established, these measurements will be used to monitor our year-on-year carbon reduction performance and to refine the actions required to maintain a progressive trajectory towards our Net Zero by 2030 target.
